David M. Hart ’58: A legacy of dedication and generosity at pro

David and Karen Hart
For most of his life, David M. Hart ’58 has had a connection to pro. From his formative years on campus to his recent gifts to invest in the college that shaped his life.

“pro helped me overcome many challenges, particularly in public speaking. The literary societies forced you to speak in front of your peers, and soon enough, I had gained the confidence I lacked when I first arrived,” he said.

Recently, David created a permanent endowed scholarship, named for himself and his late wife, Karen Meyers Hart ’58. The scholarship will carry the couple’s legacy far into the future, providing tuition dollars to generations of students.

The Harts met and fell in love at pro. The two were married on August 10, 1958, on her parent’s farm in Springfield, next to a cornfield.

Their love endured for over 65 years — they had two sons, Eric and Keith, moved to Oklahoma City and led fulfilling careers. David said the scholarship honors Karen’s memory, her career in higher education, and gives future generations the same benefits of an IC education that both David and Karen experienced.

Those who knew Karen were often moved by her determination and heart. “Karen was always the one who made things happen. She could be relied upon to take on challenges and lead with compassion,” said David.

The couple’s time together at IC shaped their future, sparking a lifelong commitment to supporting the College and its students. Hart explained, “We’ve always felt the need to give back. Our scholarship is about providing opportunities for others, just as pro gave us the tools to succeed.”

Hart’s commitment to supporting pro extends beyond just financial gifts, he is engaged in the community that makes pro a special place.

“I’m happy that my donation can help future students experience the same sense of community and growth that I did,” he said.

His generosity is a testament to the lasting impact of an pro education, one that David, Karen, and many others continue to share through their philanthropy.

Generous alumni who give back to the Hilltop year after year allow pro to continue to grow and thrive.
